{"id":211,"date":"2018-03-14T16:30:59","date_gmt":"2018-03-14T21:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/?p=211"},"modified":"2018-03-14T16:30:59","modified_gmt":"2018-03-14T21:30:59","slug":"teaching-hitting-to-any-age-player","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/teaching-hitting-to-any-age-player\/","title":{"rendered":"TEACHING HITTING TO ANY AGE PLAYER"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-103\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/coach-andy-hallett.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/coach-andy-hallett.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/coach-andy-hallett-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><u>Coach Andy Hallett<\/u><\/em><em>:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the years I have heard all the lingo, the latest buzz, the newest and greatest thing when it comes to teaching how to get a hitter to hit the ball hard and stay consistently on the barrel.\u00a0 MLB network, as well as many websites\/blogs and self-proclaimed hitting coaches love to talk about: launch angle, exit velocities and any other \u201cnew and hot\u201d ways to teach hitting.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be the first to tell you that is great; if it works for you.<\/p>\n<p>I have been a Ted Williams disciple since I started coaching and believe every hitter needs to have a slight upper cut swing in order to \u201cget on plane\u201d with the baseball.\u00a0 My coaches and I teach our hitters to strive to be a line drive \/ ground ball machine.\u00a0 The margin for error as a hitter is so small that the difference between a line drive and ground ball is 1\/4 of an inch at contact.<\/p>\n<p>I have a saying \u201cstrike zone knowledge is the # 1 overriding factor to be a good hitter\u201d.\u00a0 If you do not have plate discipline, you will never be a good hitter.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s hard to put a good swing on a bad pitch\u201d is what I tell all my hitters.<\/p>\n<p>I want to take you all into the \u201ccoaching hitters\u201d mode and share with you what we teach at AC Flora and what I teach in all my private lessons from ages 10 and up. \u00a0We all know that language is everything, so I am going to use pictures to help explain \u201cmy language.\u201d\u00a0 Videos would be better, but that would make this post even longer.<\/p>\n<p>Before getting started, I want to make a point to say that my way is not the only way.\u00a0 I just want to share what I have been teaching since I took the head baseball job at AC Flora in 1998.\u00a0 You should understand that I am a linear coach and preach linear movements in hitting and pitching on a daily basis.\u00a0 I equate throwing and hitting to \u201cthrowing a punch\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>SO HERE WE GO\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"607\" height=\"370\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/coach-hallett-high-five.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width:607px; width:98%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/coach-hallett-high-five.jpg 607w, https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/coach-hallett-high-five-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>A: Athletically Tall Stance.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nHitter should be able to stand in box.\u00a0 The legs and or back should never get tight or tired.\u00a0 Feet should be just wider than shoulders.\u00a0 Hands should be in the \u201carm pit area\u201d. Back foot slightly pigeon toed and front elbow pointing down towards home plate.\u00a0 Front shoulder should be connected to the pitcher and back elbow should be anywhere below the shoulder joint.\u00a0 In this photo, the hitter has his knees \u201cpinched\u201d towards each other to create slight tension in his I.T. bands and to activate his glutes and hamstrings.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"766\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-212\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width:602px; width:98%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-1.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-1-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>B: Load the body \/ trigger the hands.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe hitter should gather over his back leg, front hip &amp; shoulder stays connected to the pitcher, hands start to glide back (start of throwing a punch).\u00a0 Weight should never get outside of the hitters frame and bottom hand arm should not straighten out. Barrel starts to get to top of his head. Back elbow raises naturally and front leg creates \u201ck-bar\u201d to start linear move. I want this move on the top half (trigger) to be natural and feel free.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"299\" height=\"321\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width:299px; width:98%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-2.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-2-279x300.jpg 279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>C: Create separation inside your swing.<\/strong><br \/>\nAll hitters need tension to create power.\u00a0 This is the start of our linear movement where I emphasize staying connected with the ball with the front hip.\u00a0\u00a0 Separation is essential as the hitter gets to his launch position.\u00a0 Front foot reaches with K-bar and hands go back maintaining \u201cbox and a stick\u201d with arms and bat. Hands should be just behind back foot. \u00a0The front shoulder rolls under the chin as two eyes stay on the pitcher (ball).\u00a0 The Nike Swoosh is soon to follow as we start to attack the ball. \u00a0<em><strong>This is the start of our Nike Swoosh swing path.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"448\" height=\"454\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width:448px; width:98%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-3.jpg 448w, https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-3-296x300.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>D: Attack<\/strong><br \/>\nOnce the pitch is released, the hitter has milli-second to decide whether to swing or not, what the type of pitch is and the location of the pitch.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0The back knee, groin and hip accelerate towards the ball and we attack with the intent of knocking the cover off the ball (picture 1) hands are still back.\u00a0 As we attack with our front hip, the front leg posts out, as the foot gets down, we attack the ball with such violence that we want the back foot off the ground at contact.\u00a0 The shoulders should be in line with the hip, and hands extended out in front with power L in top arm (picture 2). We swing with the intention to crush balls on every swing before 2 strikes.\u00a0 We want to attack the ball with the idea of creating a Nike Swoosh.\u00a0 The third picture captures this philosophy as you can see hand path as well as bat path and the \u201cresemblance\u201d of the Nike Swoosh.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"584\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-4.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width:640px; width:98%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-6.jpg 608w, https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-6-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>E: Swing plane and Finish<\/strong><br \/>\nThe path we are looking for is slightly upward and on plane with the pitch.\u00a0 We work hard on \u201cstaying behind the ball\u201d with our eyes and getting extended out in front.\u00a0 I am a two hand finish guy and believe it promotes acceleration through the zone.\u00a0 Sir Isaac Newton proclaimed that \u201can object tends to stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force\u201d.\u00a0 I use the bat hitting your shoulder\/back as the outside force and the bat should not stop accelerating until that happens. \u00a0Sidenote: This will happen much less on a pitch away, as our finish is much higher and away from the hitter\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"626\" height=\"734\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-218\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theathletemaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hitter-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width:626px;
